Sometimes after a Firefox crash or “Force Quit,” you’ll receive the message: “A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time.” when you try to run Firefox again.

This solution worked for me:

Open Terminal and navigate to the Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/***.default directory.

Type ls -la to view the directory contents (and invisible/hidden files) and ensure that the file .parentlock is there.

Type rm .parentlock to delete the file

Open Firefox and you shouldn’t see the error message again.
